Job Description:
Reporting to the Property Claims Supervisor, the incumbent reviews and directs Independent Adjuster’s investigations and evaluates, negotiates, and settles claims arising under personal lines, farm and commercial policies.

Job Requirements:

  •     University degree or college diploma and/or equivalent business experience.
  •     CIP designation or working towards would be an asset.
  •     Thorough knowledge of the litigation process and provincial legislation/statutes.
  •     Valid Alberta Drivers License.
  •     3-5 years related experience within insurance or related industry.
  •     Technical expertise in the investigation, quantification and settlement of automobile, property, liability, and casualty claims.
  •     Multi-line product knowledge (commercial and personal products).
  •     Litigation management skills.
  •     Knowledge of litigation and arbitration process.
  •     Knowledge of the principles of contracts and contract law.
  •     Knowledge of medical terminology and the relationship to quantum.
  •     Knowledge and use of MS applications: Outlook, Excel, Word, Power point and the internet.
  •     Detailed orientated, well organized, professional.
  •     Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  •     Critical thinking skills: using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and/or approaches to problems.
  •     Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills.
  •     Proven organization, time-management, administrative and computer skills.

Job Duties:
  • Advise Independent Adjuster’s of Wawanesa’s philosophy, reviewing reports and ensuring they are complete and on track, controlling costs where possible and verifying coverage.
  • Investigate, evaluate and settle claims, applying technical knowledge and human relations skills to effect fair and prompt disposal of cases and to contribute to a reduced loss ratio.
  • Confer with legal counsel on claims requiring litigation.
  • Pay and process claims within a designated authority level.
  • Overseeing large losses.
  • Attend questioning proceedings, mediations, judicial dispute resolution (JDR) and mini trials.Overseeing large losses.
  • Establish, adjust reserves and provide reserve recommendations to ensure reserving activities consistent with corporate policies.
  • Enter claim payments, reserves and new claims on computer system, inputting concise yet sufficient file documentation.
  • Process payments and obtain necessary releases in a timely manner.
  • Resolve complex claims using high service oriented file handling.
  • Knowledge of the Minor Injury Regulation, Insurance Act of Alberta, Traffic Safety Act, Tort Law, the Intercompany Agreement and other relevant legislation.
  • Represent the company in a respectful and professional manner, applying the principal of good faith in all dealings.
  • Attend legal and vendor seminars to obtain knowledge regarding legislation and trends in the insurance industry.
