Job Description:
Receives cash from Customers or associates in payment for goods or services by performing the following duties.

Job Requirements:

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. 
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of Canadian money. Some Wal-Mart Cashiers may be required to perform these operations using foreign currency such as U.S. money. 


Basic Reading/Writing Skills

  • Ability to understand to the meaning of written or printed matter and to record information by inscribing characters or symbols.
  • Licensing & Other Qualifications
  • The associate must complete all Wal-Mart Basic and Advanced Training Modules and classes.

While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is regularly required to:

  • Stand. 
  • Use hands to scan items and manually key prices on the register keyboard. 
  • The Associate will be required to perform tasks involving firm grasping. 
  • The Associate will be required to have sufficient co-ordination (i.e. placing and screwing in a small washer on a bolt, picking up a paper clip, etc.). 
  • The Associate must frequently lift and/or move at least 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) and up to 23 kg (50 lbs.). 


Work Environment

Job Duties:

  • Provides excellent Customer service through: 
  • Practicing the 3 Metre Rule. 
  • Greeting all Customers warmly. 
  • Assisting Customers with the bagging and loading of their merchandise. 
  • Moving to the outside/front of the register, when possible, to greet the next Customer. 


Maintains excellent productivity levels by:

  • Scanning merchandise quickly and accurately. 
  • Achieving the "Item Per Hour" goal. 
  • Achieving the "Scanning" Percentage goal. 
  • Attending all Cashier training sessions. 
  • Being familiar with Courtesy Desk and People Greeter procedures. 


Ensures that safe work practices are followed including:

  • Performing stretches/warm-ups prior to starting his/her shift. 
  • Using proper lifting techniques. 
  • Using the "power grip" when scanning merchandise. 
  • Keeping the register area clean. 
  • Following Occupational Health and Safety Act guidelines. 


Maintains register security by:

  • Watching the area closely and contacting the Customer Service Manager in the event of a problem. 
  • Accepting all forms of Customer payment according to company guidelines. 
  • Correctly counting back change to the Customer to prevent cash overages and shortages. 

Understands and follows the EAS Program by:

  • Deactivating all merchandise that is purchased. 
  • Demonstrating knowledge about responding to EAS alarms and filling out the "Failure to Deactivate" Log. 


Utilizes the Customer Service Manager's help by:

  • Calling him/her for overrides on Error Corrections or Voids as needed. 
  • Makes change, and issues receipts to Customers.

Operates a cash register by scanning items across an electronic scanner to record price, compile printed list, and display cost of the Customer's purchase, tax, and rebates on the monitor screen.
