Contract Duration:  Approximately thirteen (13) months
Health Services – Environmental Health

Job Requirements:

  • A university degree in applied science with major/specialization in public health
  • A Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors certification combined with experience as a Public Health Inspector
  • Knowledge of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, Ontario Public Health Standards & Protocols and other applicable legislation/regulations
  • Experience conducting inspections and conducting communicable disease investigations
  • Demonstrated strong judgment and investigative and problem solving abilities
  • Enforcement experience (orders, tickets), preparing crown briefs
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) as well as presentation skills
  • An ability to work in an environment with competing  and shifting priorities
  • Exceptional time management and organizational abilities
  • Proficient computer skills -Windows XP, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, EIM, Hedgehog and use of a tablet computer in the field
  • Knowledge of Tier Two Electronic Documentation System (TTED)
  • An ability to work as part of a team, including community partners
  • An ability to travel to various regional locations and a willingness to work some evenings and weekends.



Job Duties:

  • Reporting to the Supervisor of the Education and Information team, you will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing environmental health educational and promotional programs, activities and materials.  This includes the Food Handler Certification course, presentations at in-service, other meetings and related events.
  • Perform technical assessments while staffing the Environmental Health Contact Centre on rotation
  • Provide consultative services and direction to clients on Environmental Health programs and health hazards in the community, including various Acts, Regulations, Guidelines and municipal by-laws
  • Inspect and investigate health hazards
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce compliance under various Acts, Regulations, Guidelines, and municipal by-laws for food safety, communicable disease investigation and control, infection control and health hazard investigation
  • Perform technical assessments of applicable building plans,  investigate complaints and provide consultative and educational services to clients
  • Perform a defined role in public health emergencies, lay charges, issue orders and exclusion letters
  • Prepare MFIPPA requests, crown briefs and testify in court


Compensation:  Band 6 - As per Non-Union Salary Structure plus comprehensive benefits
