Job Requirements:
• Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
• A minimum of 8 years experience representing management in employment (including workplace health & safety) and labour law.  Some experience as in-house counsel would be an asset. Experience working in a unionized environment, preferably within the food industry, would also be an asset.
• Must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
• In-depth knowledge of Ontario employment and labour laws.
• Demonstrated ability to provide practical legal advice in a business environment.
• Demonstrated experience in legal research, analysis, and reasoning.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills combined with effective presentation skills and the ability to adjust communication style and presentation for the audience.
• Highly developed planning, project management and organizational skills to manage complex, sensitive issues and changing priorities successfully.  Able to adapt to unexpected circumstances and peak periods.
• Knowledge of current trends and developments in the legal profession and their practical applications.
• Effective negotiator.
• Ability to reason through highly complex spoken and written information.
• Able to function both independently and as part of a team.
• Intermediate computer skills: able to independently work with MS Word and Outlook.  Excel, PowerPoint would be an asset. Moderate knowledge of internet and proprietary research databases.
• Knowledge of French (oral and written) would be an asset.

Job Duties:
• Provide legal advice on employment and labour law matters.
• Develop strategy, prepare arguments, draft responses, prepare witnesses and represent the company at various legal hearings, including arbitration, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, etc.
• Advise and assist in the resolution of matters relating to discipline and termination of employment, including constructive and wrongful dismissal.
• Provide guidance on matters related to harassment, sexual harassment and discrimination.
• Provide support and advice on employment legislation and interpretation.
• Draft severance documentation, provide advice on severance offers and assist in negotiating settlements.
• Assist in formulating, drafting, editing and implementing employment and labour related Company strategies, policies and procedures for preventing and addressing legal problems to mitigate risk and protect the Company.
• Represent the Company at various mediations and/or adjudications as required.
• Ensure employment contracts are designed to align with business requirements while protecting the interests of the organization
• Interpret and proactively communicate employment and labour related laws, rulings, and regulations, outlining the implications to the Company.
• Prepare employment and labour related legal briefs and legal opinions as required.
• Provide information, support and direction to outside counsel representing the Company in LR and HR litigation and other matters.
